OVERVIEW

Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme will provide you with an IELTS free pathway if you meet the academic, but not English language requirements for entry into Massey University. It focuses on various reading, listening and study skills and the strategies necessary for success in academic contexts. It will also help you to develop your vocabulary and grammar, particularly in key academic skills of discussion and presentation.

If you are preparing to enter university directly, and already have a higher level of English but don’t meet the requirements for your preferred programme, you can take English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2).

You can also take EAP2 if you have completed EAP1 and would like to gain more language confidence.

The EAP syllabus and programme dates have been carefully designed to allow students a smooth transition from English to tertiary studies.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to complete the recommended program duration according to their current English level. Entry to EAP 2 requires an IELTS of 5.5 overall (no band below 5.0). Click here for more information.

For students without English test results, we offer internal testing free of charge. Contact us for more information at muc.admissions@massey.ac.nz

Programme Structure

In our EAP programme, we’ve created an adult learning environment that introduces you to university teaching methodologies. You’ll engage in collaborative learning, structured self-study, and student-teacher dialogue just as though you were studying a bachelor’s degree. You can expect a range of multi-media materials and challenging tasks that encourage you to draw on your future study direction or past career experience.

Our experienced team of teachers will carefully guide your development across the four key language skill sets. Our programme is designed to improve accuracy, fluency, and confidence across reading, writing, listening and speaking.

You will develop a higher level of skill in reading, writing, listening, and speaking:

Speaking: giving presentations, participating in seminars and tutorials, working in groups.

Listening: listening to lectures, note-taking techniques, listening skills practice.

Reading: strategies such as skimming and scanning, understanding assignment questions, coping with extended reading.

Writing: learning to construct paragraphs, essays, reports and summaries, analyses of numerical data and case studies, research and referencing techniques.

You will be expected to complete 30 hours of study each week, 20 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of self-study including research or projects.
